    Summary

    The Dollar General Literacy Foundation supports programs in Dollar General hometown communities that are helping individuals take their next steps towards a bright future.

    ?The following grant programs are currently available through the Dollar General Literacy Foundation:

    • Adult Literacy Grants: This program awards funding to nonprofit organizations that provide direct service to adults in need of literacy assistance. Organizations must provide help in one of the following instructional areas: (a) Adult Basic Education, (b) GED or high school equivalency preparation, and, (c) English Language Acquisition.
    • Beyond Words: The Dollar General School Library Relief Program: This program is administered by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), and benefits public school libraries recovering from major disasters. The fund provides grants for books, media, and equipment that support learning in a school library environment.
    • Family Literacy Grants: This program provides funding to family literacy service providers. The Foundation uses the federal government's definition of family literacy when reviewing grant applications. Organizations applying for funding must have the following three components: (a) Adult Education Instruction; (b) Children's Education; and, (c) Parent and Child Together Time (PACT).
    • Summer Reading Grants: This program provides grant funding to local nonprofit organizations and libraries to help with the implementation or expansion of summer reading programs. Programs must target Pre-K through 12th grade students who are new readers, below grade level readers or readers with learning disabilities.
    • Youth Literacy Grants: This program provides funding to schools, public libraries, and nonprofit organizations to help students who are below grade level or experiencing difficulty reading. Grant funding is provided to assist in the following areas: (a) Implementing new or expanding existing literacy programs; (b) Purchasing new technology or equipment to support literacy initiatives; and, (c) Purchasing books, materials or software for literacy programs.

  • Eligibility Details

    To be eligible for a grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, your organization must be a nonprofit organization as determined by the IRS, a public library, school or college providing direct literacy services within a state that Dollar General Corporation operates in and is within 15 miles of a Dollar General store.


    Other eligibility requirements are specific to each grant type and can be found below:

    • Adult Literacy Grants - Eligible applicants are nonprofit organizations that provide direct service to adults in need of literary assistance.
    • Beyond Words - Eligible applicants are public school with a pre-existing library, that have incurred substantial damage or hardship due to a natural disaster, fire or an act recognized by the federal government as terrorism within 36 months of the date of the disaster.
    • Family Literacy Grants - Eligible applicants are family literacy service providers.
    • Summer Reading Grants - Eligible applicants are local nonprofit organizations, schools and libraries who target pre-k-12th grade students who are new readers, target below grade level readers, and assist readers with learning disabilities.
    • Youth Literacy Grants - Eligible applicants are schools, public libraries, and nonprofit organizations.

    Deadline Details

    • Adult Literacy Grants: The 2025 cycle will open on January 9, 2025 (deadline February 6, 2025).
    • Beyond Words Program: Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.
    • Family Literacy Grants: The 2025 Family Literacy grant applications will open on January 9, 2025 (deadline February 6, 2025).
    • Summer Reading Program: The 2025 Summer Reading grant applications will open on January 9, 2025 (deadline February 6, 2025).
    • Youth Literacy Program: The 2025 Youth Literacy grant applications will open on March 6, 2025 (deadline April 3, 2025).

    • Beyond Words Program: Award amounts vary
    • Family Literacy Grants: Maximum award is $10,000
    • Summer Reading Program: Maximum award is $3,000
