    Summary

    The Unity Foundation seeks to accept and pool charitable contributions from a variety of resources, and use the proceeds to support other charitable activities and organizations to benefit the residents of La Porte County, IN. The foundation makes discretionary and field of interest grants to charitable organizations in the area of the arts, education, health and human services, the environment, and the community.


    The Unity Foundation awards grants under the following categories:

    • Community Grants: As Unity Foundation embraces the future of serving La Porte County, the Grant Making Committee encourages submission of innovative projects. Many good repetitive projects have been supported over the years, but the preference for 2018 is to seek out new concepts that will further enhance the quality of life and strengthen our county.
    • Teacher Grants: Current teacher grants available are:
      • Michigan City Education Foundation Grant: The Michigan City Education Foundation small grant program is designed to give teachers a chance to develop creative programs and turn them into classroom activities that promote real learning for children. 
      • Barbara A. Carmen Memorial Endowment Fund Grants: The Barbara A. Carmen Memorial Endowment Fund was established to encourage elementary teacher empowerment through small grants.
      • MCAS Teacher Innovation Grant: The Teacher Innovation Fund for Michigan City Area Schools is a small grant program designed to promote innovation and creativity making teaching more fun for professionals and much more effective in reaching and inspiring our students.
      • Janet (Collings) Drayton Teacher Innovation Grant: Janet Drayton Teacher Innovation Fund is a grant program intended to be utilized for classroom projects that support math and science learning and field trips that teach the history of La Porte County.

  • Eligibility Details

    Eligibility varies based on program area:

    • Community Grants: Eligible applicants are non profit organizations serving the residents of La Porte County, Indiana. Governmental bodies, such as townships and fire districts, as well as educational institutions, are also eligible; however, please note the additional restrictions for those organizations under General Grant Making Policies.
    • Michigan City Education Foundation Grant: MCEF accepts applications from teachers in K-8 schools serving Michigan City. These schools include: Barker Middle School, Coolspring Elementary School, Edgewood Elementary School, Joy Elementary School, Knapp Elementary School, Krueger Middle School, Lake Hills STEM Magnet School, Marsh Elementary School, Notre Dame Catholic School, Pine Magnet School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Queen of All Saints Catholic School, Springfield Elementary School, St. Paul Lutheran School, and St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic School.
    • Barbara A. Carmen Memorial Endowment Fund Grants: Eligible applicants are Indiana elementary school teachers.
    • MCAS Teacher Innovation Grant: Eligible applicants are Michigan City High School and La Porte County Career and Technical Education/A.K. Smith Career Center teachers/professionals. 
    • Janet (Collings) Drayton Teacher Innovation Grant: Eligible applicants are licensed teachers employed by the La Porte Community School Corporation and teaching at Kingsbury Elementary School.

    Deadline Details

    Eligibility varies based on program area:

    • Community Grant applications were to be submitted by July 1, 2018.
    • Applications for Teacher Grants are to be submitted by October 12, 2018.

    A similar deadline is anticipated, annually.

    Award Details

    Community grants range from $500 to $3,000 each. Teacher grant awards vary.
